How the ranking works.
Ohio Bar Certified Paralegal
The Ohio State Bar Association, a voluntary bar association rather than a state agency, certifies paralegals who meet its definition and eligibility rules and pass its written exam. Its standards set four routes to paralegal certification in Ohio, each combining education with full-time paralegal experience: a bachelor's degree in any field plus a paralegal program of at least 20 semester hours and one year; a bachelor's in paralegal studies and one year; an associate's in paralegal studies of at least 60 semester hours and five years; or a high school diploma and seven years. Applicants also need 12 hours of continuing legal education in the three years before applying and three references, two of them from Ohio attorneys.
The written exam for paralegal certification in Ohio covers substantive and procedural law, research and writing, ethics, communication, computer knowledge and office management. Certification lasts four years, with 12 hours of continuing education every two. The application costs $150 for Ohio Bar members and $200 for others, and the exam costs $100 or $150. The 2026 exam was May 16. In July 2026 the association counted more than 240 current Ohio Bar Certified Paralegals.
The Ohio State Bar Association offers a voluntary certification program for paralegals. Individuals meeting the Ohio Bar’s definition of a "paralegal," meeting the eligibility requirements and passing a written exam will be designated as an Ohio Bar Certified Paralegal.

The Associate of Applied Business (61 to 63 credit hours) is a two-year, four-semester sequence: introduction to the paralegal profession, civil procedure, Legal Research and Writing I and II, law office technology, torts and evidence, and business transactions, plus paralegal electives, a practicum and a capstone, alongside accounting, composition, government, critical thinking and math. The post-degree certificate (29 to 30 credit hours) covers the same paralegal core, electives, practicum and capstone in about one year. Students must take at least nine semester credits of legal specialty courses through synchronous instruction, and the practicum gives supervised work experience in a law firm or law-related setting in the final term.
Admission to the paralegal program is separate from admission to the college: applicants must earn a B or better in Introduction to the Paralegal Profession (PL-1001) and submit a program application and personal narrative, and associate degree applicants also need a high school diploma or GED and English composition. The certificate is for students who already hold an associate, bachelor's or master's degree. Applications are accepted each semester, students may enroll part-time or full-time, and graduation requires a 2.75 GPA in paralegal courses.

The second adds Using Microsoft Office: Word and Excel, Advanced Legal Research Writing, either Employment Law and the Administrative Process or Criminal Law and Procedure, Legal Internship/Seminar I, and four credits of technical electives chosen from Real Estate Law and Practice, Probate Law and Practice, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Legal Issues in Cyberspace, Investigative Fact-Finding, Litigation Management, Family Law and Legal Internship/Seminar II. Some, but not all, paralegal courses are offered online, and the program is structured so that every student completes at least 9 semester credits of synchronous instruction.
Admission to the certificate has its own requirements: English Composition I and II (or 6 semester credits of college-level English composition and literature), 12 more semester credits of approved general education courses, and an additional 42 semester credit hours, with applications handled through the Counseling and Advising Center. Introduction to Paralegal Studies is offered every semester, including summer, and is open to all students. Transfer credit for legal specialty courses needs Program Director approval, a grade of C or better and a course from an ABA-approved paralegal program, and certificate students must earn at least 11 of the 24 required legal specialty credits at Lakeland. Courses designated as technical courses require a grade of C or higher, and Lakeland says the program makes students eligible for the Ohio State Bar Association Paralegal Certification. Across Ohio's ranked approved programs, you'd pay between $4,569 and $12,906 for a full-time year of tuition and fees as an Ohio resident,

Tuition and fees are what each school reported to IPEDS for a full-time undergraduate year in 2023-24, tuition plus required fees, before books, supplies or aid. A certificate of about 30 semester credits is roughly a full-time year of coursework, but programs differ in length and many students take them part-time, so read the figure as a way to compare schools. Colleges set new rates every year. It is not the price of a post-baccalaureate or extension certificate, which schools price separately.
