380 schools conferred 4,193 paralegal associate's degrees in 2023-24. Of those schools, 151 are ABA-approved.
BLS lists an associate's degree as the typical entry-level education for paralegals and legal assistants.
Dallas College leads the 62 approved associate programs that can be finished online, at $6,000 a year out of state.
Campus programs are ranked on each state's page, on the in-state price a resident pays.
College Scorecard reports a median for each school's associate's graduates in legal support services. The median of those school-level medians is $37,551 a year after finishing, across 74 schools.
The associate's degree is the most common way into paralegal work. It takes about two years full time, pairs
the paralegal courses with general education, and is offered mostly by community and technical
colleges, which is why the price you pay depends so much on where you live. This page ranks the
approved programs that can be finished online against each other, on the out-of-state price anyone can pay,
and links each state's campus programs, ranked on the in-state price.
The Best Online Paralegal Associate Degrees
62 ABA-approved associate's programs can be finished at least partly online, by the school's own page or, where it says nothing, the federal record.
Tuition is a full-time year of out-of-state tuition and fees. The ranking scores tuition and fees (40%), graduation rate (30%), paralegal graduates (30%). Each factor is scored by percentile among the programs ranked at the same award level, so a program at the middle of its field on tuition scores 5 of 10 on that factor. The three factor scores are combined by weight into a score out of 100. How the scores work.

West Valley College in Saratoga, California offers a Paralegal Associate in Science degree (60 units) and a 35-unit Paralegal Certificate of Achievement. Both share 29 units of core courses (legal analysis, introduction to paralegal studies, introduction to American law, civil litigation procedures, pre-trial procedures, legal research and writing, writing for law practice, legal ethics and professional responsibility, law office management, Microsoft Word for the law office, computer-assisted legal research, legal technology, paralegal employment preparation and a paralegal internship) plus 6 units of electives such as corporate law, family law, probate, will drafting and estate planning, intellectual property, employment law, immigration law, elder law and patent administration. The internship places students in a law office doing paralegal-level tasks. At least 9 units of legal specialty courses must be taken in a synchronous or face-to-face format.
The certificate is a post-degree program for students who already hold an associate or higher degree; students without a degree earn the A.S., which adds general education to reach 60 units, and A.S. graduates also qualify for the certificate. The program is designed so a full-time student who already has a degree can finish in three semesters, though many students take three or more years because they work full-time or are raising a family. Up to 12 units of legal specialty courses can transfer from another ABA-approved paralegal program, and no more than 3 units of administration of justice courses may count as electives. Students with no law office experience are advised to start with Introduction to Paralegal Studies and Introduction to American Law, and an orientation is held before each fall and spring semester.

Campus Associate Degrees, By State
A campus associate's degree is a local purchase, so it's ranked where you live. Every state page ranks its own
approved associate degree programs on the in-state price; the states below are ordered by how many they rank.
The ABA's guidelines describe what an approved program contains: at least 60 semester hours, including at least
18 of general education across three or more disciplines and at least 18 of legal specialty courses, which are
courses developed for paralegals that teach substantive law or procedure and practical skills. An associate's
degree is built to that shape. Colleges award it as an AA or AS, transfer degrees the ABA treats as meeting its
general education requirement, or as an AAS, an applied degree that leans further toward the paralegal courses.
If a bachelor's is a possibility later, the transfer degree is usually the safer start, since each four-year
school decides how many of a program's credits it accepts. If the goal is work as soon as possible,
the certificate covers the paralegal courses in less
time, and if you already hold a degree, you have the
post-baccalaureate certificate instead.
Common Questions About The Paralegal Associate Degree
Is an associate degree in paralegal studies worth it?
It's the credential BLS names as the typical entry-level education for paralegals and legal assistants, whose median pay (SOC 23-2011) was $62,890 in May 2025. The median of the school-level medians College Scorecard reports for associate's graduates in legal support services, across 74 schools, is $37,551 a year after finishing. That counts only graduates who received federal aid, and it's a first-year figure, not a career one. Whether it pays for itself depends on the price, which at a community college in your own district is usually the lowest of any route.
Is paralegal a two or four year degree?
Either, or neither. The associate's degree takes about two years full time, the bachelor's about four, and a certificate can take less than a year. 380 schools conferred a paralegal associate's degree in 2023-24, against far fewer bachelor's programs, which is why BLS lists the associate's as the typical entry route.
Can I get a paralegal associate degree online?
Yes. 62 ABA-approved associate programs can be finished at least partly online, by the school's own page or, where it says nothing, the federal record, and 102 schools in all report that every paralegal associate track they offer can be finished online. Approved programs still require at least nine credits of live legal instruction, which online programs deliver by video.
What is the difference between an AA, AS and AAS in paralegal studies?
The AA and AS are transfer degrees built on general education, and the ABA treats either as satisfying its general education requirement. The AAS is an applied degree that leans further toward the paralegal courses and isn't assumed to meet that requirement. Whether its credits count toward a bachelor's is decided by the four-year school that receives them.
