A post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate is the legal coursework alone, for someone who already holds a bachelor's degree. The degree covers the general education.
Published tuition for the approved programs compared here runs from $2,307 at Florida State College at Jacksonville to $26,103, with a median of $4,728.
35 of the 57 say the certificate can be taken online, with the live sessions every ABA-approved program requires.
An ABA-approved certificate meets California's first route to the paralegal title outright, and NALA's exam accepts graduates of post-baccalaureate programs under its first category.
Prices here are what each school publishes, read on the date shown. Fees, books and certification exam fees are extra.
If you already hold a bachelor's degree, you don't need two years of school to become a paralegal. A
post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate teaches the legal coursework alone, usually in a year or less. The ABA's guidelines treat a bachelor's degree as meeting the general
education and the 60-credit total they require, so a certificate for degree holders can be approved on its legal
specialty courses, at least 18 semester credits of them.
These certificates are also the ones federal data describes worst. Many are run by a university's continuing
education or extension division at a price of their own, and some award non-credit certificates that IPEDS doesn't
count. So this page compares them on what each school publishes: the certificate's tuition, its size, its
format and who may enroll. Where a school publishes a rate per credit or per course rather than a total, the
tuition shown is that rate times the published number of credits or courses, and the table says so.
Why certificates priced apart from tuition are compared, not scored.

FSCJ says its Legal Studies (Paralegal Studies) A.S. has held ABA approval since 1997; the degree ends with a professional internship of at least 180 hours at a law-related office, and bachelor's degree holders can take a 22-credit Advanced Technical Certificate instead.
Key Program Details
A.S. in Legal Studies (Paralegal Studies): 64 credits
A.T.C. in Paralegal Studies: 22 credits, bachelor's degree required
A.S. ends with an internship of at least 180 hours or a simulated law office class
Some credit hours must be taken through traditional classroom instruction
FSCJ dates ABA approval to 1997 for the A.S. and fall 2015 for the A.T.C.

Florida State College at Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida offers the Associate in Science in Legal Studies (Paralegal Studies), 64 credits, and an Advanced Technical Certificate (A.T.C.) in Paralegal Studies, 22 credits. The A.S. combines general education with courses in introduction to legal studies, legal research and writing I and II, tort law, technology in the law office, family law, litigation, wills, trusts and estates, real estate law and business law, plus law-related electives such as criminal law and procedure, contract law, alternative dispute resolution, debtor/creditor law and certified paralegal exam review. It culminates in a professional internship of at least 180 hours at a law-related office in the student's last term, or a simulated law office class for students who cannot complete a traditional internship. The A.T.C. covers introduction to legal studies, legal research and writing I and II, tort law and litigation, plus a law-related elective and an internship, simulated law office course or certified paralegal exam review.
Neither program can be completed entirely online: because of ABA requirements, students must complete a minimum number of credit hours through traditional classroom instruction. The A.T.C. is a limited-access program open only to applicants with at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and a 2.0 grade point average; FSCJ says the A.T.C. has been ABA-approved since its creation in fall 2015 and lists it as not financial aid eligible, while the A.S. is. A grade of C or higher is required in legal studies coursework, and transfer of legal specialty courses from other institutions may be limited by the program's ABA approval. FSCJ says graduates of both programs meet the educational requirements to sit for NALA's Certified Paralegal exam.

The Advanced Technical Certificate is 33 semester hours over three terms: Introduction to Law and the Legal Professions, Legal Research, Legal Writing and Civil Litigation; then Wills, Trusts, and Probate Administration, Torts and Personal Injury Law, Business Law and the cooperative education requirement; then Family Law, Business Organizations and Court Systems and Practices. The 60-hour Associate of Applied Science takes the same courses in a plan that runs through Term IV and adds Principles of Financial Accounting, Composition I and II, Psychology of Adjustment, Business Computer Applications, Business and Professional Communication, Texas Government, a mathematics or science course and a creative arts or language, culture and philosophy course. The cooperative education requirement is met with LGLA 2380, or with LGLA 2281 and LGLA 2288 in consecutive semesters, and needs the program coordinator's consent. TCC does not offer legal specialty courses by alternative means, so they are taught in traditional classrooms, and the catalog lists the Northeast Campus as the program's location.
TCC awards the certificate only to students who earned a bachelor's degree before beginning it and who want to complete the requirements to take the Certified Paralegal exam given by the National Association of Legal Assistants. Associate degree students must meet the Texas Success Initiative requirements. Legal specialty courses with a Workforce Education Course Manual number transfer between Texas institutions, other courses are reviewed by the program coordinator, and at least 25 percent of the coursework, including 12 hours in the major, must be completed at TCC. TCC notes that the program does not qualify students to take a bar exam, represent clients in court or give legal advice.

These approved programs reported post-baccalaureate paralegal certificates to the federal government for 2023-24.
Their state pages and the ABA list carry their federal figures.
Price is the widest gap, and the table shows it. After that, three questions settle most choices. Format:
an online certificate still meets live, at set times, for at least nine credits.
Credit or non-credit: a credit-bearing certificate can count toward a later degree.
A non-credit one generally does not count toward a later degree. Where you'll work: in California an

a certificate as a degree, so the state you plan to work in can decide between two otherwise similar programs.
Common Questions About A Post-Baccalaureate Paralegal Certificate
What is a post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate?
It's a paralegal certificate for someone who already holds a bachelor's degree. It skips general education, because the degree covers it, and teaches the legal coursework alone. The ABA treats a bachelor's degree as meeting the general education and credit total in its guidelines, which is how such a certificate can be ABA-approved on its legal courses, at least 18 semester credits of them.
Do I need a paralegal certificate if I have a bachelor's degree?
Not always. BLS says employers typically want an associate's degree or a paralegal certificate, and some consider experience instead. But a certificate opens routes a degree alone doesn't. California's statute accepts an ABA-approved certificate outright, while a bachelor's degree there needs a year of supervised experience and an attorney's declaration. And NALA's exam accepts a degree holder with 15 semester hours of paralegal courses without the year of experience it otherwise asks for.
What is the cheapest post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate?
Among the approved programs compared here, Florida State College at Jacksonville's, at $2,307 in tuition (in-state, $105 × 22 credits). That excludes fees and books, and a rate for residents of a district or state may not be what you'd pay if you live elsewhere.
How long does a post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate take?
Usually a year or less, whether you study part-time or full-time. The programs compared here run from 18 to 46 semester credits where they count in credits, and the table gives each school's stated length.
Can I take a post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate online?
Yes. 35 approved programs compared here say the certificate can be taken online. Expect scheduled live classes: the ABA requires every approved program to teach at least nine semester credits of its legal courses synchronously, and video classes count.
