Johnson County Community College ranks first among ABA-approved online certificate programs, at $5,472 a year for an out-of-state student.
33 approved certificate programs, 62 associate's degrees and 12 bachelor's degrees can be finished at least partly online, by the schools' own pages or the federal record.
Every approved program must teach at least nine semester credits of legal courses live. Video classes count, so online programs meet it with scheduled sessions.
29 of the 33 ranked certificate programs charge their own state's residents less than the out-of-state figure ranked here.
11 more approved programs carry the ABA's online flag but award certificates the federal data does not count, most of them at university extension divisions.
102 schools report a fully online paralegal program without ABA approval. The largest are listed below, unranked.
An online paralegal certificate program here is one a school's own page says can be completed online, or one the
school reports to the federal government as completable through distance education: every paralegal
program it offers at that level, or at least one of them. The school's page wins where the two disagree,
so a program whose own page says it is taught on campus is left off, and each card shows the school's own
wording for its format.
Each program ranked is also on the ABA's list of approved paralegal programs, and each leads to the same job as a campus
program. What paralegals do and where they work is covered in the careers section.
The ranking of online paralegal certificate programs uses the same three factors as the state pages (tuition and fees (40%), graduation rate (30%), paralegal graduates (30%)), with one difference: the tuition
scored is the out-of-state figure, because an online student can enroll from anywhere and usually pays it.
Each factor is scored by percentile among the programs ranked at the same award level, so a program at the middle of its field on tuition scores 5 of 10 on that factor. The three factor scores are combined by weight into a score out of 100. How the scores work.
The Best Online Paralegal Certificate Programs
Of the ABA-approved programs, 33 confer an undergraduate paralegal certificate that can be finished at least
partly online. 23 of them can be finished entirely online, by the school's own page or
the federal record, and the rest offer an online option beside campus classes or for part of the program. Tuition is a full-time year of out-of-state tuition and fees. The in-state figure is beside it where it's
lower.

The A.S. is designed mainly for students with little or no previous college credit, and A.S. and B.S. students are encouraged to add the certificate as a secondary curriculum because all of its courses are part of both degrees. No more than nine legal specialty credits can transfer into the certificate or the A.S., and students must earn a C or higher in Introduction to Law & Ethics before taking other paralegal courses. Approved Online Programs The Federal Data Does Not Rank
These approved programs carry the ABA's online flag but have no federal figures to rank: most award a
non-credit certificate through a university's extension division or law school, which IPEDS doesn't count,
and several are priced apart from the university's tuition. The
post-baccalaureate certificate page compares them on what their own pages publish.
ABA-approved online programs without federal rankings
102 schools report a fully online paralegal program and are not on the ABA's list. Approval
is voluntary, so these aren't failed programs, but their graduates can't use a route that names ABA approval,
such as the first one in California's paralegal statute (other routes, including most of NALA's, may still apply),
and they are listed here rather than ranked. The
20 below conferred the most paralegal awards in 2023-24.

Common Questions About Online Paralegal Programs
Are online paralegal certificates valid?
What a certificate is worth rests on the school and the program, not on how it was delivered: the ABA approves online programs under the same guidelines as campus ones, and every approved program, online or not, must teach at least nine semester credits of its legal specialty courses live, which an online program meets with scheduled video classes. What no certificate does is let you practice law. A paralegal works under a lawyer's supervision, and the few states that let paraprofessionals give limited legal help do it through a separate license.
Can you get an ABA-approved paralegal certificate online?
Yes. 33 ABA-approved certificate programs are completable at least partly online, by the school's own page or the federal record, and 11 more approved programs, mostly at university extension divisions, carry the ABA's online flag. Expect some live sessions: the ABA requires them.
What is the best online paralegal certificate program?
On this ranking, Johnson County Community College, which charges out-of-state students $5,472 for a full-time year of tuition and fees, graduates 29% of its first-time students and conferred 31 paralegal certificates in 2023-24. Santa Ana College and West Valley College follow. The ranking scores tuition and fees (40%), graduation rate (30%), paralegal graduates (30%).
What is the cheapest online paralegal program?
Among the ranked approved certificate programs, North Hennepin Community College reports the lowest out-of-state tuition and fees, $5,050 for a full-time year. 29 of the 33 charge their own state's residents less, so the cheapest option is usually a program in your own state.
Do online paralegal programs qualify you for certification exams?
NALA's Certified Paralegal exam, the one with the most holders, accepts graduates of any ABA-approved program, online or not, among several other routes, and NFPA's exams accept certificates from approved programs. The certification pages set out each body's routes in its own words.
