Paralegal Certificate Length At A Glance
- Full time, most of the approved certificates profiled here take two or three semesters. Part-time schedules run to two years or more.
- Approved certificates that don't require a bachelor's degree have a median of 30 semester credits. Certificates for degree holders have a median of 27.
- The ABA sets its minimum in credits: at least 18 semester credits of legal specialty courses, with no exemptions.
- A degree shortens the certificate: the ABA assumes a bachelor's or associate of arts or science degree covers general education.
- Eight-week courses are common online, but eight weeks is the length of a course, not of the certificate.
A paralegal certificate's length is set by its credits, and the credits depend on what you bring to it. This page answers from three places: the ABA's guidelines, which set the floor every approved program must meet; the approved programs' own pages, which state their credits and how long they take; and federal data on the certificates schools award. Lengths below are the schools' own words.
The ABA's Minimum
The ABA approves programs, not a length of time, and its minimums are in credits. Every approved program must be at least 60 semester credits of education, at least 18 of them general education and at least 18 legal specialty courses, and a program may not exempt anyone from the legal specialty credits:
"A program may not permit exemptions from the legal specialty requirement of 18 semester credits or equivalent."
ABA Guidelines for the Approval of Paralegal Education Programs, G-302
A certificate can be shorter than 60 credits because of what you already have. The guidelines say the general education and total-credit requirements "are assumed to have been satisfied" by a bachelor's degree or an associate of arts or science degree, though not by an associate of applied science. That's why a certificate for degree holders can be legal courses alone, and why some certificates ask applicants without a degree for college credits first. An approved program may also offer short-term or stackable certificates below the 18-credit floor, but the ABA's answer is that they "are not considered approved program options", and their literature must say they do not prepare students to work as paralegals (ABA, frequently asked questions).
How Long Each Approved Paralegal Certificate Takes
107 approved paralegal certificates come with a length the school states. The 25 smallest are below, smallest first. Approved certificates that don't require a bachelor's degree run from 18 to 60 semester credits, a median of 30. Certificates for degree holders run from 18 to 46, a median of 27. The longest, at National University, Pasadena City College and Santa Ana College, count the general education the ABA requires toward a 60-credit total.
The other 82 are on the ABA's list of approved programs, by state.
What Makes It Shorter Or Longer
- A degree. Certificates for degree holders can leave out general education, and the ones profiled here have a median of 27 semester credits, against 30 for certificates open without a bachelor's. George Washington University states as little as nine months for its 18-credit certificate, and Wilmington University as little as ten months for its 24 credits.
- Full or part time. Most schools state a full-time length. College of the Canyons designs its 31-credit certificate for two years part time and publishes a one-year sequence, and Louisiana State University states one year full time or about two and a half years part time.
- Intensive schedules. Widener University Delaware Law School states one 14-week summer or one academic year, and Marist University runs its certificate over 24 weekends in 12 months.
- Online pacing. Eastern Kentucky University states nine months on campus or eighteen months online for its post-baccalaureate certificate. Some online programs run courses in eight-week sessions, but every approved program must include at least nine semester credits of legal specialty courses taught live, in person or in real time online.
What Federal Data Shows
IPEDS sorts certificates by length. Its band of 12 weeks to under a year covers programs of 9 to 29 semester credits. Longer certificates, up to two years, fall in the next band. Schools with an open, ABA-approved program awarded 1,839 undergraduate paralegal certificates in 2023-24, and 53% were in the one-to-two-year band. Post-baccalaureate certificates are counted apart. These counts cover every paralegal certificate at those schools, including any offered outside the approved program.
| Length band | Certificates, 2023-24 | Share | Schools awarding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 12 weeks | 65 | 4% | 3 |
| 12 weeks to under a year | 756 | 41% | 52 |
| One to under two years | 969 | 53% | 70 |
| Two to under four years | 49 | 3% | 2 |
